Year 5 Curriculum Statement
English- In English in year 5 we emphasise pupils’ enjoyment and understanding of language, especially vocabulary, to support their reading and writing. We focus on pupils’ knowledge of language gained from stories, plays, poetry, non – fiction and textbooks. This supports their increasing fluency as readers, their facility as writers, and their comprehension. They are taught to enhance the effectiveness of their writing as well as their competence.
In reading the children are encouraged to work out any unfamiliar words and accurate reading of individual words, which might be key to the meaning of a sentence or paragraph, improving comprehension. We focus on new vocabulary when reading with children, both a word’s meaning and its correct pronunciation. Children continue to read and discuss an increasingly wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non – fiction and reference books or textbooks. We look at reading books that are structured in different ways and reading for a range of purposes.
In writing the children continue to learn to plan their writing by identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing. Identifying the appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning. Describing settings, characters and atmosphere and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance the action. They are taught to use a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs. They learn to evaluate and edit work, focussing on the effectiveness of their writing and to recognise changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning. It is important that the children can proofread their own work for spelling and punctuation errors. Regarding children’s handwriting, they learn to write legibly, fluently and with increasing speed.
In SPaG the children learn to use and understand grammatical terminology in English accurately and appropriately in discussing their writing and reading.
The children have 5 spelling lesson, 6 English lessons and 1 handwriting lesson each week.

Maths- In Year 5 we continue to implement a mastery approach using the White Rose Maths Scheme of work which allows pupils to develop a culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths. Our aim is to extend children’s understanding of the number system and place value to include larger integers, developing the connections that they make between multiplication and division with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio. We encourage children to develop their ability to solve a wider range of problems, including increasingly complex properties of numbers and arithmetic, and problems demanding efficient written and mental methods of calculation.
